Celebrating a Fabulous Week at School

Back to School and On Time: Let’s Make Attendance Our New Year’s Resolution!

Welcome back to the first week of school! After chatting with many of you on the gate, it’s clear you all had an amazing Christmas and a wonderful start to 2026. The buzz around school has been fantastic—children are back with big smiles, bursting with enthusiasm and eager to show off their learning. It’s like they’ve come back supercharged!

A special shout-out to our Year 3 and Year 4 football stars who represented Chiseldon Primary & Nursery at the recent tournament. They came back buzzing with excitement, sharing all the highlights. Although the trophy didn’t make it home this time, the real win was the fun and teamwork they showed. Well done to all of you for representing the school so brilliantly—keep that spirit alive!

Now, onto a slightly more serious note but still super important—attendance. We’ve had some changes in how we report attendance to the Department for Education (DfE), so I want to keep you in the loop.

Here’s the scoop:

  • When your child’s attendance dips below 95%, you’ll get a friendly letter from us—think of it as a little nudge.
  • If attendance falls below 90%, that’s classed as persistent absence by the DfE. This will trigger another letter inviting you to chat with us about how we can support and maybe set up an attendance plan.
  • If attendance still doesn’t improve, we’ll send an email to invite you in for a more detailed discussion and to start an early help record—this is just us looking out for you and your child to see if there’s anything more we can do.
  • If attendance falls further, the Educational Welfare Officer might get involved, and unfortunately, this could lead to a fine.
  • And if it drops below 50%, well, that’s when things get serious and escalate further.

But here’s the good news—Chiseldon has never had to go down the serious route! Most children improve their attendance with a little encouragement and support, so let’s keep up the great work of getting everyone into school every day.

Remember, every day in school counts towards your child’s learning, friendships, and future successes. Let’s make 2026 a year of great attendance and even greater achievements!

Thanks for your continued support—here’s to a fantastic term ahead!
