Science

At our school, we inspire curiosity and a love of discovery through our engaging and comprehensive Science curriculum. Using the well-structured PlanBee Science planning, we ensure that pupils develop a deep understanding of scientific concepts, build essential skills, and cultivate a mindset of inquiry and experimentation. Our approach supports all pupils to become confident young scientists who can think critically, ask questions, and explore the world around them.

Planning

Our Science curriculum is carefully planned using PlanBee resources, which are designed to provide clear progression in scientific knowledge and skills from Early Years through to Year 6. Lessons are sequenced to build on prior learning, ensuring pupils connect new knowledge with what they already know. This approach supports pupils with diverse needs, including those with SEND, by breaking down complex concepts into manageable steps and providing appropriate scaffolding.

We prioritise:

  • Clear learning objectives aligned with the National Curriculum.
  • Opportunities for pupils to engage with scientific enquiry and different types of investigations.
  • Integration of cross-curricular links, especially with Literacy and Maths, to deepen understanding.

Teaching

Our teaching approach is rooted in evidence-based practises that promote active learning and critical thinking. Teachers use a variety of strategies, including:

  • Systematic explanations and modelling to introduce scientific concepts.
  • Regular use of scientific vocabulary with explicit teaching to build language skills.
  • Practical, hands-on experiments that allow pupils to apply their learning and develop enquiry skills.
  • Opportunities for pupils to discuss, write, and present scientific ideas, reinforcing their understanding.

We ensure that lessons are inclusive and differentiated to meet the needs of all pupils, supporting those with additional needs to access and thrive in Science.

Interactive Learning & Engagement

We believe that Science should be exciting and accessible to all pupils. Our lessons incorporate:

  • Interactive activities such as experiments, observations, and group investigations.
  • Use of multimedia resources and technology to enhance understanding.
  • Opportunities for outdoor learning and real-world science experiences.
  • Encouragement of curiosity and questioning, fostering a classroom culture where pupils feel confident to explore and hypothesise.

Our approach helps pupils develop resilience and perseverance, key skills for scientific thinking.

Assessment

Assessment in Science is ongoing and multifaceted to provide a clear picture of each pupil’s understanding and skills. We use:

  • Formative assessment strategies such as questioning, observations during practical work, and pupil discussions.
  • Summative assessments aligned with curriculum objectives to track progress and identify areas for development.
  • Opportunities for pupils to self-assess and set personal learning goals, fostering responsibility and reflection.
  • Regular review of assessment data to inform teaching and provide targeted support where needed.

Our assessment approach supports continuous improvement and ensures all pupils achieve their potential in Science.

My Happy Mind Testimonial

Good morning Mr Allen,

I just wanted to say what a fantastic programme this is, Olivia has been telling us all about the hippocampus, including what it does and where it is! It gave us a good laugh when she brought it up at the dinner table the other night.

Kind regards,

Dan M
