Relationships education (RSE)

At our school, Relationships Education is a vital part of our curriculum that supports pupils in building positive, respectful relationships and understanding emotional wellbeing. Our carefully developed programme fosters connection, empathy, and self-awareness, preparing pupils for healthy relationships now and in the future. We work closely with parents to ensure transparency and support, especially around sensitive topics such as sex education in Year 6. Our use of the MyHappyMind programme reinforces pupils’ mental health and emotional resilience weekly.

Curriculum Planning

Our Relationships Education curriculum is thoughtfully designed to build knowledge and skills progressively across all year groups. Leaders have ensured the curriculum meets statutory requirements while reflecting the needs and values of our community.

Key planning features include:

  • A clear sequence of learning that explores friendships, family, respect, consent, and emotional wellbeing, building connections across topics and year groups.
  • Specific provision for Year 6 sex education, focusing on understanding bodily changes and puberty in a sensitive, age-appropriate manner.
  • Use of evidence-based resources, including MyHappyMind, to support pupils’ mental health and social-emotional learning.
  • Sharing of curriculum content and resources with parents to foster partnership and address any questions, ensuring openness and trust.
  • Alignment with the school’s HEART values, promoting honesty in communication, respect for self and others, accountability in relationships, and trust within the school community.

Assessment

Assessment in Relationships Education is ongoing and focuses on pupils’ understanding, attitudes, and skills. Our approach includes:

  • Formative assessment through discussions, reflections, and pupil feedback to gauge understanding and emotional response.
  • Use of wellbeing surveys and MyHappyMind progress checks to monitor social-emotional development.
  • Opportunities for pupils to self-assess their confidence and understanding in managing relationships and emotions.
  • Regular review of curriculum impact to ensure it meets pupils’ needs and informs future planning.

This assessment framework supports personalised support and helps pupils grow as emotionally intelligent and respectful individuals.

My Happy Mind Testimonial

Good morning Mr Allen,

I just wanted to say what a fantastic programme this is, Olivia has been telling us all about the hippocampus, including what it does and where it is! It gave us a good laugh when she brought it up at the dinner table the other night.

Kind regards,

Dan M
