Welcome to Year Six

Blue Planet Overview.pdf

Term 1

Welcome to your first term in Year Six.  We have an exciting time ahead - this term begins with our whole school topic, Blue Planet.  We will also be recapping some Maths and looking at place value.  In English we will be writing speeches and letters linked to our topic and in Science we will be looking at Classifying Organisms.  We will normally have PE on a Thursday, but this term is swimming.  I will send out a letter with regards to more information on this as soon as we are back.  I will upload the spellings every Friday, as this is the day we will be completing our spelling test and getting our new spellings, so please ensure you have your homework books in. I look forward to seeing you all in your ocean gear on Wednesday, I know we will have a busy but rewarding term.

Topic Overview
Week 1 - 04/09/26

Well, what a first week back!  So far, we have completed two quick maths assessments, to help me understand where they are currently.  These will help me in my future planning.  We have also started to think about some conservation issues linked to the ocean and will be creating our own campaigns linked to this. Today we got our new spellings, we also had our first Oracy lesson - the Word of the Week is 'ambivalence'.  Ask us what it means!

Week 2 - 11/09

Week two completed.  This week in Maths we worked very hard with our place value, looking at each place value column up to 1,000,000, and writing these numbers in both words and numerals.  In English we started looking at a Greta Thunberg speech and all the key features that go into writing a persuasive speech.  We also had our first swimming lesson and science lesson.

Hopefully our reading records should arrive this week and we can start practising them using the look, cover, write check sheets and also recording all our reading we should be doing at home.

Week 3 - 18/09/26

This week we have all worked very hard, as we have had our very first SATs experience.  This was not to see who would pass, but to give them a taste of what is to come and also to see what they have retained from previous years.

We have also started our art project linked to our topic Blue Planet - some of these will be incredible, with a very real environmental message.  Also, if you would like your child to take part in our Berlin trip next year, please let the office know and sign up ASAP.  It is an amazing experience and such an opportunity to meet the Penpals they will be writing too over the course of this year.

Our word of the week is LUDICROUS - please ask us what it means!

Spellings - homework books have now gone home, so spellings can be practised three times a week and daily reading can be logged.

My Happy Mind Testimonial

Good morning Mr Allen,

I just wanted to say what a fantastic programme this is, Olivia has been telling us all about the hippocampus, including what it does and where it is! It gave us a good laugh when she brought it up at the dinner table the other night.

Kind regards,

Dan M
