Find out more about Year 4, Jupiter class.

Hello! Welcome to our class page where you will find lots of information. Every day, remember a clear, named water bottle, a named PE kit with a House colour t-shirt, weather appropriate clothing (especially for all the OPAL fun), a current reading book (either from home or school) and an enthusiastic attitude to learning. Good attendance is essential this year as we cover so much each day and need to constantly build on previous learning.
Drop an email to the office if there is anything else I can help you with.
Kind regards,
Mrs Brock, Year 4 Class Teacher
Happy 100th birthday to Sir David Attenborough! We finished our unit on non-chronological reports and we will start planning our own on natural disasters next week. We ended our decimal unit with a quiz and have started a new unit on fractions. Our challenge rounders match against Year 5/6 was exciting and competitive - watch out for the finals coming soon. Our Book Talk looked into the emotional responses of Wilbur and other characters in Charlotte's Web. As part of our Hindu topic, we discussed what dharma is and how we have duties to ourselves, home, school and other areas. The children tell me they have lots of chores at home - so lucky to have such helpful children!
Enjoy the weekend and if you have any siblings in Year 6, be extra kind to them this weekend.
Spellings: exit, extend, explode, excursion, exchange, export, exclaim, expel, external, exterior
breathe, chief, chimney, donkey, dream, field, freeze, grief, shriek, treat
Our week started with MyHappyMinds, deciding on what our Big Dream Goal would be. The children set a goal and by showing resilience and perserverance, some were able to achieve it within a week. Keep trying with those goals, you can do it! We enjoyed creating our own fruit/vegetable portraits inspired by Giuseppe Arcimboldo, check out the details! How many foods can you recognise? We continued with our German, now able to say a sentence about what is in the kitchen. During Book Talk, our main character Wilbur has found out what the central problem is - he might be Christmas dinner! Our maths has continued with decimals, including money and our non-chronological report has got technical with Seismic waves and lithospheres. How do we fit it all in?
Enjoy the long weekend and hopefully the weather will stay sunny.
Spellings: autograph, autobiography, automatic, autofocus, autocorrect, autopilot, autorotate, automobile, autonomy, autocue
blend, daddy, dressed, fiddle, ladder, made, middle, opened, played, sound
The children have helped to write this blog, so they wanted to let you know they have been working hard. Some of the highlights from this week: making Ooblek and visiting Nandos; cricket, particularly batting; finding out about Hindu Gods; decimals; rounders, especially fielding; mountains, and how they are formed - dome, plateau, volcanic, fold, fault block; the tallest mountain in UK is Ben Nevis; non-fiction non chronological report writing on earthquakes, finding out what to do if there is an earthquake. As you can see Year 4 have been busy, some children thinking our visit to Nando's was weeks ago - how time flies! With the improving weather, please ensure the children have a named sun hat and named sun cream, which they can apply independently.
Enjoy the weekend, having a sort out for our Rags to Riches collection on Wednesday.
Spellings: antiseptic, anticlockwise, antisocial, antidote, antibiotic, antivenom, anti-ageing, antifreeze, anti-perspirant, anti-gravity
break, chain, eight, great, late, obey, neigh, rein, veil, weigh
Either I'm getting shorter or everyone grew over the spring break! Wonderful seeing everyone back and with a real enthusiasm for the new term. We made a super start to our non-chronological report unit on earthquakes with some captivating questions and sharing of previous knowledge. Decimals and fractions have made our brains work a bit harder but we are beginning to see how they are parts of a whole. Our science, states of matter, inspired a discussion on non-Newtonian fluids, including Oobleck - make some at home - 2 parts cornstarch to 1 part water. We started Charlotte's Web and there were some great new front cover designs. The children enjoyed a very wet rounders game compared to a sunny cricket session with Vickie from Wiltshire Cricket. Teamwork, following rules and taking part were all displayed passionately. Next week, Nando's on Monday, cricket on Thursday, plus St George's can wear red to celebrate St George's day.
Have a dazzling weekend!
Spellings this week: interact, interfere, intercity, international, intermediate, internet, intergalactic, interrupt, intervene, interlude
able, after, ant, apron, ask, baby, father, lazy, saddle, watch
Welcome back after the spring break - hope you had some family time and enjoyed a rest! This term is only six weeks and there is so much to fit in. We start our "Engage" unit in MyHappyMinds, thinking about what goals we can achieve. We will be finding out about states of matter in Science, decimals and fractions in maths, non-chronological reports and our topic is all about "Mountains." In RE, our question is What does it mean to be a Hindu in Britain today? Chance to Shine cricket will be delivered by Vickie on a Thursday, so please ensure PE kits are in, weather appropriate as we aim to be outside. We have a visit to Nando's plus I'm hoping to hear we have some finalists in our Primary Engineer competition.
Check back regularly to see what we have been learning.
What a fantastic week, enjoying the iambic pentameters in Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. The children were hooked at every cliffhanger in the play, acted out the balcony scene, designed new costumes and insulted each other in the style of Shakespeare! Father Roger welcomed us to church on Wednesday for an Easter blessing and the weather stayed fine for our Easter Bonnet parade, followed by an enegetic disco. We finished our maths unit with a 16 question quiz on both multiplication and division and we had an outstanding winner for Spring Spelling Bee.
"Parting is such sweet sorrow / That I shall say good night till it be morrow." Have a super break and I look forward to seeing you all on Monday 13th April for the start of Term 5.
Definitely feels like Spring is in the air! We were visited by the chicks and the children were mesmerised by the cheeping and pecking that was the soundtrack to our day. It was splendid to see everyone holding the chicks, showing gentleness and respect. The sun was out when we were enjoying our cricket session delivered by Aled from Chance to Shine. He was brilliant at spotting little tweaks that the children listened to and improved their skills accordingly. Science week started with a BBC live lesson on conductors and insulators. We tested our own conductors and insulators by making circuits using different components. Our Science week challenge was to design something to protect our most precious objects from deterioration. Top tip, keep your treasures safe! Store drawings away from sunlight, handle special objects with clean hands and protect treasured keepsakes from water, dust, or pests, including siblings! We have moved onto division in maths, starting to use division brackets, sometimes called bus stops or short division. We completed our own instructions linked to mummification and turned our photos into Pharaohs. Last week of term is Shakespeare week, when we will be reading Romeo and Juliet, love is in the air! Wednesday we will be anticipating Easter at Holy Cross church and Thursday we will be parading our Easter Bonnets, followed by the Easter disco. How do we fit it all in?!
Have a spectacular weekend, especially if you are celebrating Eid.
Spellings - solve, solution, insoluble, dissolve, solvent, sign, signature, assign, design, signal
We have thoroughly enjoyed our Native American Art theme planned by Miss Cheesley for Art Week, watch this space to see some of the outstanding work which will be displayed in the hall, from totem poles to teepees. Supermarine ran a very energetic rugby session and hopefully some children will be inspired to take rugby up as a hobby. Next week, we have a cricket session to show there are alternative sports to football! On Wednesday, the weather stayed fine as we challenged ourselves to work as a team during orienteering. We have started using formal written methods in multiplication and it is so important to keep those times tables ticking over. The Emile Spelling final took place this week and we achieved 21st position against some very competitive schools. Thanks to Mrs Moore for her time and enthusiasm to help us create our Easter Bonnets ready for the parade on Thursday 26th at 15:00.
Have a magnificent weekend, celebrating mother's everywhere.

Outside of school, we have children helping out with lambing, swimming team try outs, achieving silver medals in cheerleading and being recognised as man of the match in rugby and football - awesome! Next week will be our Arts week with a focus on exploring Native American art, as part of a whole school theme of exploring diverse cultures through art, fostering creativity and appreciation for global artistic traditions. We also will be completing our Primary Engineer competition entries and we have a rugby session led by instructors from Supermarine on Tuesday, so please ensure appropriate PE kit is in school. Have a fabulous weekend and don't forget to spend your World Book Day voucher.

Please ensure the routine of homework is back in place, filling in the homework book with reading and spellings, at least three times a week. Homework books need to be in on Fridays so we can copy in the next week's spellings. If this is not happening, please drop me an email to discuss a best solution. Doodle is still available, if you need a new login, let me know. Next week, we have our last swimming session on Tuesday, an Emile spelling competition, Thursday is World Book Day - can't wait to see what the children are passionate about, and Raj is visiting on Friday to help with our engineering designs. So proud of all of Year 4, a brilliant assembly, worth all the hard work learning your words. The song was fantastic, especially with the signing. This week has felt different, having Wednesday away from school. The children settled back quickly today, completing the end of unit quiz for our column addition and a mystery box inspired by a picture of a FrogDog! We have worked hard this week on checking for mistakes in our written work and text generated by AI - this helps to improve our own work and correct it accordingly. We found out about kosher foods in our Judaism and labelled the digestive system. A BIG THANK YOU to Mr Timlin for installing our new interactive board - the text is so clear and the children have definitely noticed. Next week will be all about assessments. Make sure you have plenty of rest this weekend, be determined on Monday to show off all you know! Thank you to the parents who have booked a meeting time on Tuesday and Wednesday. These are only for 10 minutes so please help me to keep to timings! If needed, we can book another appointment after half term. Enjoy the weekend before the last week of term.
Spellings: submerge, subheading, submarine, subordinate, subway, superman, supervise, supersede, superpower, superhuman
We seem to have something different going on every week - keeps learning interesting! A group enjoyed cricket skills on Monday and hopefully will continue practising the skills they were taught. We marked Holocaust Memorial Day on Tuesday by considering how we are all connected and made people paper chains, plus swimming. On Wednesday, we enjoyed a fantastic performance at STEAM, explaining how Isambard Kingdom Brunel influenced the development of Swindon. Our assembly is on Thursday 5th February, starting at 3pm. Please spend some time this weekend learning the words. We have finished our unit on column addition with regrouping and are almost finished our non-fiction newpaper report unit, preparing for our independent write. We created posters to remind people how to look after teeth, including eating sugary foods at mealtimes, visiting a dentist regularly and replacing toothbrushes every three months.
Have an outstanding weekend and fingers crossed for some sunshine!
Teacher Training Day on Wednesday - no school for children.
Spellings for this week - creation, radiation, indication, ventilation, relegation, dedication, demonstration, abbreviation, translation, vibration
Fantastic week, Jupiter class, thank you! We're enjoying the attitude of gratitude from MyHappyMind and hopefully you are noticing appreciation at home. The children enjoyed their first session of swimming and hopefully they will take full advantage from learning this life skill. Four digit column addition started off as a challenge, but the children have shown determination and are now confident in regrouping. We participated in the Emile MTC over Wednesday and Thursday and we made it through to the final next week! This continued practise will really help to consolidate their times table knowledge and speed. The artwork produced linking to our topic "Battle of Britain" was exceptional. Soon, it will be put on display in the corridor for everyone to enjoy. Please encourage the children to learn their assembly words ready for 5th February. Next week is busy, with some children representing the school on Monday at a cricket festival, swimming on Tuesday, STEAM on Wednesday and Raj, the engineer, visiting on Friday. Have a restful weekend, fingers crossed for some sunshine!

The homework journals have been received well and will build on the learning we are completing at school. Well done Jupiter for achieving the attendance trophy for the first week back - let's see how many more weeks we can achieve highest attendance. The children have enjoyed sharing their holiday news with each other, getting back into routines and starting our new topics for the term. Eating and digestion started off with the difference between omnivores, carnivores and herbivores, with lots of discussion around different animals. We have spent time learning 11x and 12x tables and revising previous tables, keep up the good work Jupiter, it is showing. The children designed a new creature based on our non fiction genre, newspapers, and over the next few weeks we will be building up to writing our own newpaper reports.

Happy New Year to everyone! I hope you had a fantastic break and I can't wait to hear about all the fun and memories made. See you on Monday 5th.
This term, we will be finding out how the Battle of Britain's impact was huge: it was Nazi Germany's first major defeat, stopping Hitler's planned invasion of the UK, boosting Allied morale, keeping Britain in the war, which forced Germany to fight a two-front war, ultimately shaping the entire course of WW II. Newspaper reports will be our focus in writing and maths will be written methods for column addition and subtraction, plus continuing with multiplication and division recall. Digestion and eating is our topic for Science, identifying and classifying omnivores, herbivores and carnivores. We will be starting swimming towards the end of January and more details will follow.
Keep checking back for regular updates, good luck with your goals for 2026.
The last week of 2025 at school! What a brilliant week with some stunning performances, supported by a very enthusiastic choir. Thank you to everyone who took part and enjoyed the slap stick humour. We have filled the rest of the time making Christmas decorations, answering Christmas quizzes and building good friendships. Spelling Bee was competitive with challenging words - will you be participating in the next one?
Thank you for the gifts, cards and kind words Mrs Powton and I have received. We wish you a wonderful Christmas break and an amazing New Year. We look forward to hearing all about it when we return on Monday 5th January 2026.
How much Christmas fun can you take! Well, this week was full. The children have enjoyed a delicious Christmas dinner, dancing at the disco, spending money at the Christmas Fair, singing carols at Holy Cross Church, plus creating beautiful family Christmas cards and artwork for Sammi Smiles, a Nationwide initiative called ‘Spread the Happiness’ to help reduce isolation and loneliness for our elderly and vulnerable living in care homes. Thank you for all your support during these festivities. We also squeezed in our extended write based on the recount genre we have been studying, trying to include all the writing features, such as alliteration, fronted adverbials, onomatopoeia, adjectives.
Next week we will be enjoying a dress rehearsal for the KS1 performance as well as performing Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies to our adults. The Spelling Bee will be on Thursday, so please spend some time learning them this weekend. We finish on Friday at 13:00, no staff run clubs, and return on Monday 5th January 2026. Have a restful weekend as the excitement builds for the big day.
Christmas has arrived with decorations, cards and JJ the elf! Our week saw the end of our recount unit, so we will be planning our independent write next week. We have been subtracting from 4 digit numbers and have enjoyed playing Jingle Bells on the glockenspiel alongside our recorders. Well done to the children who represented Chiseldon with singing some Christmas carols, hope you still have some voices for our production. The children were very inventive with their Christmas squirrels inspired by "Barrie saves Christmas" by Stephen Mangan. Next week is super busy with a visit to Holy Cross church on Wednesday, Christmas Jumpers, dinner and disco on Thursday and Christmas Fair on Friday. Please make sure you bring lots of change and try to sell all your raffle tickets, there are some great prizes.

The weeks are flying by and I can't believe we'll be into December next week! Thank you to the staff who stayed to allow the sleepover to take place, thank you to the parents who trusted us and thank you to the children who are probably feeling a bit sleepy now! Our Christmas activities have started, supported by Mrs Moore creating Christmas crafts, our snow globes and our gingerbread house photo frames displayed in the window. We have started learning Christmas carols on the recorder and I hope in the next couple of weeks we'll be able to post a performance. Thanks to Mrs Powton, our Yr3/4 football team represented us well and next year there will be more opportunities to take part in sporting competitions run by Fortius PE. Next week we will follow up the NSPCC assembly from this week, identifying who our trusted adults are. Our participation in the spelling competition on Emile was interrupted by the cinema visit, but we'll see how we place when the finals finish. We've been adding multiples of 10 to a four digit number, bridging through 10, 100 and 1000. This has been a bit tricky so please find time to practise at home, this game might help - https://ictgames.com/mobilePage/flipCounter/index....

I'm still counting all the donations from today's Children in Need Challenge 25, thank you! The children are so enthusiastic and eager to take on all our learning plus showing empathy for each other and those that they don't even know.

It has been wonderful to have all the children back after a restful two week break, having a good reset to start the term. This week we have been fortunate enough to have visits from Father Roger to share his knowledge about signs and sybmols in the Christian nativity and two more sessions with Mr Ford promoting discussions about finances, charity giving and what is a need or a want. For our recount unit, we have travelled back to ancient Greece to participate in the festival of Panathenaia, celebrating the goddess Athena. The children have worked really hard learning the 6, 7 and 9 times tables and we are becoming very competitive when playing MTC games.
Next week we will be completing our Challenge 25 for Children in Need, marking Remembrance Day by attending the war memorial and looking at how we are all accountable for stamping bullying out. Have a super weekend and thank you in advance for your charitable donations and cakes to support Children in Need.
Happy Friday everyone! Our week has been very full: visits from Wiltshire Fire and Rescue, Swindon Town Football Club, Harvest celebration, acting out our film storyboards, writing music for our recorders and completing our assessed write based on Feast. It was lovely to see so many parents supporting their children by attending parents' meetings, thank you for your patience and hopefully you found them useful. Thank you for the generous donations for Harvest, they will be well received. The cinema trip cost of £5 is now on ParentPay so please consider clearing this over the half term.

What a week - so proud of all the children and how adaptable and resilient they are. The children who came to Grittleton showed teamwork, determination to overcome problems and great friendships. The children who were in Year 5 showed all the school values, carried on even when they were missing their friends and completed so much work. Mental Health day today allowed time for the children to think about places - their Happy Place, their Middle Place and their Busy Place. Carry on the discussion over the weekend and see if your places are the same as theirs. Hopefully the Christmas card designs made it home - once you have ordered online, please return the form with attached artwork so it can be sent by Friday 17th October.
Next week, PCSO Justine on Monday, please remember Harvest donation on Tuesday, parents meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday (if you've not been able to book, I will try to catch you at drop off), Callum from STFC and Davina Sparks from Wiltshire Fire on Wednesday, deadline on Thursday for cinema response and Friday finish for half term (no staff run clubs)! Can you believe it!
Spellings this week: division, invasion, confusion, decision, collision, television, revision, erosion, inclusion, explosion
Have a super weekend and thank you for all your support and kind words.

Well, everyone has had a tough week this week with assessments, but no one gave up. Credit to the children (and the adults) for their determination to do their best. These assessments are vital for looking to fill the gaps in learning and helping to ensure all the children feel confident in completing future assessments. Our afternoons have been filled with talking about money and how to keep it safe. Mr Ford, from Nationwide, has kindly volunteered to share his wealth of knowledge and advice. Hopefully, this has prompted some interesting conversations at home and a better understanding of how to look after money.
Next week, we will be away on our residential to Grittleton and I hope to keep you updated through the school FaceBook page. Just be aware, reception is very patchy where we are. Enjoy the weekend and don't forget to pack everything you need!
Spellings this week: medal, meddle, missed, mist, scene, seen, board, bored, which, witch
The sugar rush is just beginning to wear off after our lovely Belgium waffles eaten as part of our European Day of Languages! We have been speaking French, German and Dutch, identifying where Belgium is in Europe and finding out about the Atomium. The children showed great resilience during our Emile MTC competition earning us a place in the finals next week. All this practise helps with using a device to enter the answers as quickly as possible. We have discovered a great exercise in PE - cone air hockey - ask the children to demonstrate. Our strength and stamina has improved just in the last couple of weeks, shown by the increased participation during circuits and Mile Run.
Next week is assessment week, so plenty of early nights, drinking lots of water and being outside when we're not completing assessments. Have a exhilarating weekend!

A full week, continuing our sentence stacking for "Feast" where we have used onomatopoeia, pathetic fallacy, alliteration and similes! Our maths has been focussing on adding multiples of 1,000 and working hard on all our times tables. We found out more about the Jewish faith, the Ten Commandments and what a Mezuzah is. We enjoyed a sweaty PE, building our stamina and strength with some core exercises.
Have a super weekend.

The highlight of this week was how engaged the children were with the RAF STEM workshop. Their listening, participation and enjoyment was a pleasure to be part of. Thank you to those who were able to attend "Meet the teacher" on Wednesday, I hope you found it informative. We have continued with our sentence stacking linked to "Feast" from Disney. The children are putting a big effort into making their presentation the best it can be plus improving the sentences with their own ideas and extensive vocabulary. With the weather being so changeable, please ensure a waterproof coat is in school every day plus waterproof shoes if possible. This week's spellings are: inactive, incorrect, inaccurate, insecure, indefinite, incomplete, infinite, inedible, inability, indecisive. How many words can you use this weekend?
An amazing RAF STEM workshop delivered by Pete from Hyett Education. The children were outstanding, completing a difficult activity teaching a computer to recognise a UFO and launch a plane to intercept!
What a fantastic start to Year 4! The children have created awesome film strips this week ready to start making into films - watch out Hollywood! We have been identifying values of digits in a four digit number and started our science topic about Living in the Environment. We found out about the promise God made to the Jewish people by sharing the story of Abraham and Sarah. The children were amazing remembering so much from last year's Happy Mind and we started our happy breathing today.
Have a super weekend and remember, school photos on Monday!

In Year 4, the expectation is that homework will be completed at home. If this is not possible, please come and talk to me and we will work out a solution.
At least 20 minutes of quality reading every day. This can be non-fiction, instruction manuals, graphic novels - as long as there is enjoyment and pleasure! Please record on BoomReader and encourage some reading aloud to enhance fluency and intonation.
DoodleMaths - optional assignments will be set each week plus other activities to support learning.
DoodleSpell - weekly spellings will be available here, please encourage the children to write down the spellings too so they become part of the hand's muscle memory. Spellings will be on the weekly page of the website and soon we will have spelling books.
Timestables - learn through songs, make your own games, lots of different websites to support, have a timestables poster somewhere in the house, anything that works!
Oracy - talk, talk and talk some more! Find a topic to talk about, research something together, debate something that the children are passionate about. Good morning Mr Allen,
I just wanted to say what a fantastic programme this is, Olivia has been telling us all about the hippocampus, including what it does and where it is! It gave us a good laugh when she brought it up at the dinner table the other night.
Kind regards,
Dan M
